Michael and Scottish Labour Leader Johann Lamont

At a recent meeting of the Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk CLP the new Scottish Labour party Johann Lamont Launched the Scottish Borders Labour Parties Campaign. The Scottish Borders Labour Party is fielding a record number of candidates to contest the Scottish Council elections in May 2012. To date 6 candidates will be standing across the Borders. Key priorities for the party include attracting investment, creating employment, tackling poverty, protecting local services and supporting the local economy.

At present there is not a single Labour Party councillor at Scottish Borders Council, but Chair of Roxburgh, Selkirk & Berwickshire Constituency Labour Party Michael Grieve is calling on Borderer’s to use their vote in May to change that and is upbeat about the prospects of success. He said, ‘There is a desire for change in the Borders. People know that more of the same is not going to be enough to deliver the kind of future we need. A Labour voice will stand up for public services, for health and education, and fairness for ordinary working people. We are currently gaining in numbers and winning support.’

Last Monday Michael was confirmed as a Co-op endorsed candidate. On hearing the news Michael said “I am a firm believer in Co-operative Party Policy and am very pleased that I have the endorsement of the Co-operative Party to stand as a Labour and Co-operative Candidate. I will be ensuring that the Manifesto for the Scottish Borders has Co-op policies at its heart.”
